UNVEILING THE AVANT-GARDE

The Annual Bartizal Family Memorial Concert

Unveiling the Avant-Garde: A Fusion of Poetry and Music

Honoring the memory of the fiercely supportive Dolores Bartizal, the APO invites you to experience something unconventional.

It starts with Michael Daugherty's "Dead Elvis" (1993) part of his larger work "Elvis Everywhere", a musical exploration of the cultural phenomenon surrounding Elvis Presley. Through the haunting tones of the bassoonist dressed as an Elvis impersonator and the innovative harmonies of the chamber ensemble, Daugherty's composition invites you to contemplate the enigma of Presley's legacy.

Then, it’s time to deep dive into the delightful and unconventional poetry of Edith Sitwell's "Facade" accompanied by music composed by William Walton. These poems are known for their playful use of language, rhythm, and sound, often creating a sense of absurdity.

Together, these pieces challenge the boundaries of tradition and celebrate the unexpected.
